Understanding Data Storage and Servers

For those people who are not too knowledgeable on computer technology, data storage and servers may be nearly foreign terms. They are becoming lesser through the years though. Even kids in elementary school nowadays have encountered and understood these well enough to make it a part of their vocabulary. However, computer users need to know the basics of the two.

Both have been considered as very important factors in the use of computers, especially in the internet era. Being so, you must really take some time to learn the fundamentals of these devices; from what these do for your computer to how can these be maintained well to serve your needs. The basic understanding you can have will be very helpful in your tasks with your computer.

For people who are just about to buy a PC, knowing what data storage and a server means and what these do helps a lot in making the right choice. The barrage of sales pitch from a computer salesman or the illegible technical words printed in or brochure or displayed online may just worsen the confusion.

You will certainly find it simpler to understand data storage. It is where all the information your computer receives are stored. From there, you can easily retrieve the data and manipulate it according to your purpose. There are two major storage devices in the ordinary PC; one is commonly called the hard disk while the other is the optical device such as your DVDRW.

Data storage can also be called as memory. However, this can lead to its being confused for processor registers and caches. Registers and caches store information for a short period or only for as long as the processor is using it.

The capacity for data storage is in gigabytes. It used to be in megabytes when computers use floppy disks for external storage. That was also before, when these were used only for word processing only. Today’s PCs have the capability to do more tasks that would require greater available space for keeping information.

On the other hand, your computer can be a server at the same time if it provides you access to the internet and to other computers. However, it usually refers to a device that serves a particular network. It may even be a device that just connects your computer to the internet, such as a modem.

You can have a server that is data storage at the same time. This happens when you allow others to access your stored files. If your computer serves a network, you already have a domain. Your computer can then become the domain name system’s controller.
