Computer memory and how it works is an important function for any owner of a Mac or PC to understand. Many times referred to as “storage capability” or “storage operations, ” its smooth functioning is vital for computer, and a person who knows a bit about such storage issues can better keep his or her computer running more efficiently in terms of allocating resources in the computer or outside it.

At its heart, computer storage capability is nothing more than devices that are used to store data and programs on either a permanent or temporary basis for use by the computer, which is electronic and digital in nature. Basically, all computers feature information in binary terms, meaning that anything being represented is written in a series of 1s and 0s. It is those 1s and 0s that are stored electronically.

Volatile storage capability in a computer requires that power be maintained in the computer in order to maintain information being stored on the computer at that particular moment. This is why all data up on the screen in the form of files or photos and the like tends to be lost if the computer suddenly loses power. Currently, volatile storage is either static random access memory (SRAM) or dynamic RAM (DRAM).

SRAM is thought to be microscopically better at keeping data available in the event of power loss but its volatility also means that that data basically disappears almost as soon as the power goes away. Fortunately, there are a great many improvements coming that hope to address volatile storage much more efficiently than today’s DRAM and SRAM can pull off.

For the most part, almost everyone understands what non-volatile storage is when they hear a term like “floppy disk, ” or CD-ROM. The “ROM” portion of the previous term refers to “read only memory.” These devices take data and information and allow the computer to access it through insertion into the computer itself. Flash drive technology also is currently very popular in terms of storage.

How a computer uses memory, then, is best understood as how a person accesses what is stored in his or her own brain. We have short-term and long-term types of storage when it comes to data and information and so does the computer. Also, this electronically-stored information can also be accessed externally through various storage media. Understanding storage capability can be helpful for computer user in keeping his or her computer running properly.
